The long established local firm of Pickering and Co at 42 The Shambles, York was added in 1972 and for 28 years we traded from both sites until we merged into the one premises in 2000 following the end of our lease in The Shambles.

Customers love to wander through our rooms and we have often been called a �browsers paradise�. Our secondhand stocks are comprehensive and are always changing. We welcome any enquiries and keep requests on file to try and supply later.

The business was purchased by Send the Light Ltd in June 2006 and became part of the Wesley Owen Retail Group.

The Barbican Bookshop is a rambling old premises with many rooms and several floors. The Bookshop is a family run business with many years experience of New, Secondhand and Antiquarian Bookselling.

Originally housed in Walmgate Bar in 1961, one of the 4 mediaeval entrance gates to York with the finest remaining Barbican (a protective extension to the gate) in the country, we moved into the city centre in 1967 but kept the well established name of the Barbican Bookshop.
