The long-established business of the Barbican Bookshop, has now become part of the Wesley Owen Retail Group - the UK’s largest chain of Christian bookshops.
The business, founded by Dick Rollinson, grew from a stall in York Market to a Bookroom in a private house, progressing through the historic mediaeval Walmgate Bar to Fossgate in the centre of York in 1967. Here it expanded to include many rooms of new and secondhand books, covering both Christian and general subjects. Wesley Owen has a vision for continuing the Christian witness in York, and we trust that over the next few years they will develop the current facilities to create an exciting vibrant Christian environment, which will reflect the historic nature of York and build on the great reputation of the Barbican Bookshop”.
As part of the Wesley Owen group the store will broaden its Christian selection. The store will include new, bestselling, and key ranges of books, Bibles, Children’s titles, music, DVDs, software, cards and gifts. The store will be introducing a regular promotional programme of offers, backed by a 64 page catalogue. Andy Bingham has taken over as manager of the main shop as it changes from a successful independent to part of the Wesley Owen family.
The Barbican Bookshop will for the foreseeable future continue its mix of other specialist areas and extensive second-hand sections. Les Bingham is also now employed by Wesley Owen and is continuing to develop these areas of the business.
